Deep breath in… and out…

I’ve found myself repeating this mantra a lot lately because, let’s face it - there’s a lot happening everywhere at once - in the world, in our communities and in our own lives. While not all the goings-on are inherently bad and some may argue that some things are necessary, it’s still a lot and even good things can prompt deep inhales and exhales to reground.

The end of summer and beginning of fall have been a period of reflection and integration. For the first time, I’ve been able to truly downshift and consider what alignment — in all forms and aspects — looks and feels like for me. Instead of asking myself What job sounds the most impressive? or How much do I need to make to feel secure? I’ve been sitting with broader, gentler questions: How do I want to feel while generating income? What choices move naturally and with flow, instead of resistance? Letting these questions lead has opened space to play, explore, and reconnect with aspects I’d tucked away and (re)discover what genuinely nourishes me. It’s been a sacred time — and one I’m deeply grateful to be experiencing.

When considering what alignment means for New Era, I went back to our core intentions: expand the conversation around housing and housing education, support as many people as possible, and make life simpler for clients, housing workers, landlords, and policymakers. With that in mind, a few updates feel especially exciting to share.

First, we quietly launched our brand-new website late summer. The new site feels like a breath of fresh air - clean, intuitive, and built to support the next chapter of New Era.

Secondly, I started the New Era Housing Solutions Blog! This space will allow me to reach a wider audience in a cadence and voice that feel natural and authentic. Expect posts that push the housing conversation forward, challenge old concepts and frameworks, and serve as a container for the “louder” truths housing deserves. If you’d like to receive updates when posts are published, send me an email. For now, the newsletter will be deprecated from a monthly publishing schedule to a more seasonal or bi-annual flow.

In the coming weeks, I’ll be starting a herbalism course—a passive hobby for years that now feels like something to lean into fully. I’ve been writing more, exploring body movement and stillness with intention, and following the things that feel soul satisfying opposed to draining. Early next year I turn 40, and intend to celebrate the new decade of life on my own small homestead - somewhere to rest, go foraging, create and share with community, family, and friends. Everything unfolding right now feels expansive, timely, and aligned in a way I’ve been aiming for for quite some time. It feels like stepping into purpose.

One of my favorite discoveries these past several weeks has been meeting the Great Blue Herons that live at Prospect Park. These stunning birds embody everything I’ve been integrating - slowing down, being still, and making more intentional moves. They’re famously patient, often standing motionless for long stretches, and watching them has genuinely inspired me to ease into a slower rhythm myself. After spending so much time observing (and basically befriending) two of them, I naturally went down a rabbit hole learning more. Here are a few of my favorite facts:

• Their wingspan can reach up to six feet, making them one of the most striking sights in the park.

• Even though they’re the largest heron species in North America, they only weigh about 5–6 pounds — their hollow bones keep them incredibly light.

• They use their beaks like spears, and their S-shaped neck acts like a spring for quick strikes on prey on land or in the water.

• They have special “powder-down” feathers, which create a fine powder they spread to clean off fish slime and oils.

Taking time to learn about them — and simply watch them — has been the reminder I didn’t know I needed: there is power in slowing down and being still.
